<itunes:summary>The greatest mission of The Scarlett Olive is to preserve the memory of the talent that created these beloved classic films. The definition of “celebrity” today is overnight success, fifteen minutes of fame, and then a swift descent from the celestial firmament. We refuse to let the memory of great stars and creators of the silver screen to be forgotten along with the popular culture popcorn of contemporary times.

In this media-saturated age, layer upon layer of information surrounds us daily. Some information is lost or forgotten, and some information is wrong. What the podcast desires to do is present an accurate account of Hollywood’s Golden Age in a laid-back, fan friendly manner that will not come across as intimidating or highbrow. The Scarlett Olive desires to produce shows that are both entertaining and informative.

The Scarlett Olive has the utmost respect for the people who worked in the film industry during Hollywood’s Golden Age. This podcast is a tribute to them.</itunes:summary>

The long-awaited episode featuring Karolyn Grimes, also known as Zuzu Bailey from It's a Wonderful Life, has finally arrived! This is a podcast filled with cinematic treasures as Karolyn discusses the importance of the Christmas classics It's a Wonderful Life and The Bishop's Wife. Karolyn calls herself an "antique", but you will soon find that the so-called antiquity is merely an element of her timelessness in the face of film history. She's so charming and is ever-willing to preserve the memories of these films.

It's been six months since our last podcast, but this one is worth the wait! Satisfaction guaranteed.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>August sixth marks the 100th birthday anniversary of the world’s favourite, most glamourous clown, Lucille Désirée Ball. The Scarlett Olive’s blog portion of the Loving Lucy blogathon, hosted by True Classics, will focus on the theory and traditions our beloved Lucy hails from and used in her career. The podcast portion will be about the inspiration Ball found in people and the people she herself inspired.
Lucille Ball falls under the Clown Tradition of comedy. Her predecessors and peers include the Marx Brothers, W.C. Fields, Mae West, Abbott and Costello, Red Skelton, Danny Kaye, Martin and Lewis, and Bob Hope1. The 20th century clown combines elements of vaudeville, radio, theatre/nightclub, television, and film in his or her acts and career. A successful clown dominates all these areas of entertainment. Lucille Ball either mastered these forms of media or incorporated one form in another. Radio and vaudeville especially made an impression on her television career. In fact, without them, we would not have I Love Lucy or the Lucille Ball we know and love.

After being dubbed “Queen of the B-Movies” in the 1930s, Ball found her niche in radio. Behind the mic she acquired the skill of comedic timing, and the experience of performing in front of a live audience would benefit her in the future as she starred in I Love Lucy and her other live shows. In her autobiography, Love, Lucy2, Balls says, “In radio I couldn’t depend upon props or costumes or makeup; I had to rely on timing and tune my voice for comic effects, and this was invaluable training.” Her successful radio show, My Favorite Husband (1948-1951), would become the foundation for her phenomenally famous television show, I Love Lucy.

Radio was not the only medium Ball applied to her television experience. She brought physical elements of vaudeville into television. For the pilot of I Love Lucy and in following episodes, Ball performs a vaudeville-inspired clown act with blacked-out teeth, baggy pants, a cello, and slippery hands. Ball says in her autobiography, “We adapted parts of our vaudeville act for the pilot.” Adapted is the key word of this blog.

As well, Ball was coached by Ed Sedwick, a comedy director who worked with Buster Keaton and Jack Haley. Ball was also coached by the Great Stone Face himself, who got his start on vaudeville. It is no surprise Ball is still successful today with talent like that fuelling and forming her comedic abilities.

Being a pioneer in the once wild frontier of television, Ball essentially brought clowning to television. The importance of clowning to Ball’s persona is evident in the very first episode of I Love Lucy, “The Girls Want to Go to a Nightclub” when Lucy and Ethel dress up as hillbillies to play with their husbands’ minds.

Ball’s continued practice of clowning in her first television series made it possible for other clowns to succeed on television, such as Red Skelton. I Love Lucy is the result of a winning mixture of media forms and the skills each one requires. Is it any wonder that the show still holds the record for the longest laugh from an audience in television history? A whole minute!

Ball’s ability to master, adapt, and apply skills from one form of media to another left a legacy of laughter for future generations to enjoy. Happy Birthday, Lucy. You needn’t fear like Lucy Ricardo who thought her loved ones forgot about her birthday. As long as people still watch television and surf the web, your birthday will never be forgotten.

Stick around. But first, give this episode a listen. We've spotlighted the most terrifying and dangerous dame of them all (the Wicked Witch of the West) and the not so terrifying lady who portrayed her onscreen, Margaret Hamilton. Don't forget to vote in the poll on our facebook:
Which witch is in the window in The Wizard of Oz (1939)?

It's difficult to imagine a glamourous Wicked Witch as Gale Sondergaard would have depicted her onscreen. After watching this casting video of The Wizard of Oz, it's safe to say Maggie was the right choice.

Here's one of the commercials for Maxwell House featuring Margaret Hamilton as Cora -- good to the last drop!

The MadTV alternate ending of the Wizard of Oz mentioned in the podcast. Beware of profanity and suggestive themes (after all, it is MadTV).</itunes:summary>

For years she has captivated her audience with passionate vocal delivery, dance, emotional onscreen performances, and a heartfelt, downright contagious laughter. The Scarlett Olive could not allow this day to pass without acknowledging her importance in the history of classic film, as well as our lives. Without Judy, the Scarlett Olive would not exist.

So, in honour of her birthday, we are going to post the first episode of our Judy in June series from 2010. This series features special guest, John Fricke, in all of his glory and knowledge. Mr. Fricke spoke with the Scarlett Olive for over an hour, and we condensed the interview into a three part series. It’s a guaranteed laugh and well worth your time, so give it a listen.

<itunes:summary>To continue our Dangerous Dames Series, we invited a scholarly guest to join us on our show. Jonathan Aaron Baker discusses film noir, femme fatales, and briefly Barbara Stanwyck to shed light on the formula that makes up a "dangerous dame". One of the most important twists he adds to the show is a literary background to well-known classic films.

One of the famous scenes in Double Indemnity (1944) consists of fast-paced, steamy delivery of double entendres between Phyllis Dietrichson (Stanwyck) and Walter Neff (MacMurray).

Jonathan mentions writer Raymond Chandler in the podcast and his supposed cameo appearance. Do you think it's him?

In the 1946 film The Big Sleep, Bogie and Bacall team up for the second time; proceeding To Have and Have Not (1944), the film which sparked their onset romance. They would appear in two more films together (Dark Passage and Key Largo) as man and wife.
"And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine" The Big Sleep (1946)

Barbara Stanwyck was referred to as "The Best Actress Who Never Won an Oscar". Although she was rarely a "dangerous dame", her performances in other roles (especially comedic) exemplify Stanwyck's capabilities onscreen. Other film recommendations for Barbara Stanwyck: Ball of Fire (1941), The Lady Eve (1941), Meet John Doe (1941), Night Nurse (1931).</itunes:summary>

		<itunes:summary>

May 12th marks the 104th anniversary of Katharine Houghton Hepburn’s birth. To celebrate the birth of this tsunami of talent, The Scarlett Olive talked to the ultimate fan girl – Martha Wade Steketee. If you didn’t listen to the show (shame on you), Martha is a dramaturg who lives in New York City and loves the theatricality of life and the wonder of acting and the stage. One of the biggest influences of her life was the great Kate Hepburn, and we hear her appreciation as she graciously guest starred on our show.

So, what makes Kate so great?

Katharine Hepburn is a winning mixture of all the things that make an admirable actress: strength, intelligence, wit, professionalism...and a lot of heart. She had the ability to pull off screwball comedy as Susan Vance in Bringing Up Baby (1938), be a woman of the world as Tess Harding in Woman of the Year (1941), and an understanding mother in Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967) and On Golden Pond (1981). What is compelling about Katharine Hepburn’s career is her ability to age gracefully through her roles. In a world of Botox and cosmetic surgery frenzy, it is rare to find an actress who is willing to...act her age. When Katharine was young, she played young roles. When she was middle aged, she chose age-appropriate roles such as Bunny Watson in Desk Set (1957). As an elderly woman, she proudly wore her wrinkles and silver roots in such roles as Grace Quigley (1985) and the endearing Cornelia Beaumont in the TV movie, One Christmas (1994).

Having great attributes and the ability to age gracefully are not the only things that make Kate so “great.” She has star quality. Her personality transcends the screen – whether that is big screen, television, laptop, or iPod – and touches viewers of every generation by those attributes that define her. Her spunkiness is attractive to the young at heart, her hopeful youth roles are relatable to young viewers trying to place themselves in the world, but it is her fascination for life that makes all viewers excited to be living. An actress who can make a viewer feel invigorated sixty - seventy years after a film is made must be “great.” This love of life can also be experienced by reading her autobiography, Me: Stories of My Life.

If you listened to the show and enjoyed Martha’s enthusiasm, you can follow her thoughts on life and theatre through her two blogs. Martha's musings on everyday life can be found here: www.mattiewade.wordpress.com . If you are interested in her theatre reviews, click on the following link: www.msteketee.wordpress.com

We also recommend the Katharine Hepburn hit parody on Youtube, Katie’s Corner. Alexandra Billings respectfully brings “Katie” back to life by producing “how-to” videos which end up becoming a showcase for her zany antics and hilarious stories about Hollywood stars of the past.

<itunes:summary>In honour of her 103rd birthday, The Scarlett Olive salutes the aspects of Bette Davis' long-running career as a dangerous dame. As the first femaledog "back-biter" in Hollywood talkies, Bette Davis held her own with a commanding presence over costars and often stealing the spotlight from her leading men.

Click the link below to watch the famous scenes from Of Human Bondage (1934) and Cabin in the Cotton (1932).
"Wipe my mouth!" -- Mildred Rogers
"I'd like to kiss ya..." -- Madge Norwood

Although she has a hideous wig and copious amounts of makeup, Fashions of 1934 is actually a diamond in the rough. It is one of the few comedies and one of the only musicals Davis appears in.

Jezebel was Warner Brothers' predecessor to Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind (1939) onscreen. Bette Davis was originally considered for the role of Scarlett O'Hara along with Errol Flynn as her Rhett Butler. Yuck!

We forgot to mention the name of the film from 1946, it's called Deception. Not only is it the same cast as Now, Voyager (1942), but the same director, as well. Davis was also pregnant during filming.

Bette Davis, in fact, shaved her hair AND eyebrows in order to properly portray Queen Elizabeth I.

If you have further interest in Bette Davis, we highly recommend her first autobiography The Lonely Life. It is primarily available through mom-and-pop stores or via Amazon.com. Be sure to visit her website: www.bettedavis.com
Happy birthday, Bette, we love you.
